Brighton Beach and Skydeck

Hey folks!

I know I have been slacking on my blog.  Here is a double feature to hold you over while I am in Tasmania.  This is Brighton Beach.  It is well known for its beach huts since they are colorful and artsy.  In the summer, people who own one of these huts will come to the beach and hangout in their huts.  One guy was out there when we were there, even though it wasn't a good day for the beach.  Still a neat place to visit, and only a short train ride from the city center.

Next, we went to the Skydeck.  88 stories and almost 300 meters above the streets of Melbourne, this place is good to go and get a good view of the area.  It was obviously nighttime when we went, but it was still neat to see the city in the night.  I still want to go in the daytime, though!

St. Paul's Cathedral

Hey all,
Today I went to St. Paul's Cathedral, located in downtown Melbourne. The first official church service of Melbourne was held on this site in 1836.  For a while the grounds were used for a corn market, but then the church came back to the location it is at today.  The current building was first constructed around the 1880's, and the spires were completed in 1933.  It is a nice stop-in to check out and see some nice architecture and design.

 

Festival for the people

Moomba started in 1955 and is considered the city's autumn festival.  It is also considered "the people's festival" since it is during the people's weekend, Labor Day weekend.  Moomba is continuing through the weekend and will keep going until Monday night.  It is a state holiday in Victoria on Monday, so many folks will take holiday and come to Moomba.  There is a lot that goes into the event.  Music, carnival, entertainment, and more. These are the fireworks from Saturday night on the Yarra.

Moomba: Opening Night

So the Moomba festival is going on this weekend.  It takes place every labor day weekend in Melbourne.  It consists of (free) music and entertainment and carnival rides.  This is just a shot from Friday night, the opening night.

Greetings from St. Kilda!

This suburb of Melbourne was the location of my adventures today.  A perfect day to explore the beach on St. Kilda.  Luna Park was quite busy.  It's a small theme park with little rides and a wooden roller coaster.  Unfortunately it no longer runs.  I wanted to ride!  Also found a little friend out on the rocks.  Might of had a crazy night and couldn't find the energy to go swim.

Anyways, St. Kilda is only a 30 minute tram ride from the city center.  A nice, quick retreat!
